A washing machine is one of the hardest-working appliances in the house, and most of the repair calls we get are for problems that a little routine maintenance would have prevented. None of this takes more than a few minutes a month — here's what actually makes a difference.
Detergent and softener residue builds up fast and can clog the dispenser, leading to soap not washing out properly or even mould smell. Pull the drawer out (most slide out with a firm tug) and rinse it under running water.
The rubber gasket around a front-load door traps water and lint, which is exactly why front-load machines develop that musty smell over time. Wipe it dry after washes when you can, and leave the door slightly open between cycles so it can air out.
Once a month, run an empty cycle on the hottest setting (a dedicated "drum clean" mode if your machine has one) to clear out detergent build-up and bacteria inside the drum and pipes. This single habit prevents a lot of the smell and grime issues we see in service calls.
It's tempting to cram in one more day's laundry, but overloading strains the motor and bearings and stops clothes from washing properly anyway. As a rule of thumb, you should be able to fit your hand flat on top of the load with the door closed.
Inlet and drain hoses can crack or loosen over time, leading to leaks that often go unnoticed until there's water damage. A quick visual check every few months for bulges, cracks, or looseness at the connections can save a much bigger headache later.
A machine that rocks during the spin cycle isn't just noisy — it puts extra strain on the drum bearings and suspension over time. Check that all four feet are firmly on the ground and adjust if the machine wobbles.
A loud banging during spin, water not draining fully, persistent bad smell even after a clean cycle, or error codes that keep recurring are all signs worth getting checked rather than working around. Catching a worn bearing or a failing drain pump early is usually a far smaller repair than waiting until it fails completely.
